There is so much to do and so much to see in Tzaneen and the surrounding area that the short list below is merely and indication of the activities and must-see and must-do venues and activites.

The Tzaneen Museum

It hosts ethnological artifacts such as weapons, pottery, beadwork, the largest collection of pole carvings in the country, royal drums from the rain Queen Modjadji, as well as a collection of prehistoric pottery, almost 2000 years old.

The Modjadji Nature Reserve

Here you can find the biggest concentration of one single cycad species in the world namely the Encephalartos Transvenoses or Modjadji Cycad. Some of the Cycads stand over 13 meters high, and dates back to prehistoric times (50 - 60 million years) the plants have been protected for three centuries by the Modjadji dynasty Rain Queens who have lived there.

Biggest Baobab tree in the world

Adansonia digitata - notified as the biggest specimen in the world, can be seen at the Sunland nursery. The tree has a circumference of 46,8 meters and has been estimated to be 6000 years old.

Scenic Drive

Up into the mountains to Magoebaskloof, the tea plantations, Goerge's valley, Haenertsburg, along the Great Letaba River and the Wood bush drive, which is the largest indigenous forest in the province.


Hiking Trails

Provides an equally satisfying way of experiencing the beauty of the area. Routes of varying lengths through the Magoebaskloof area all afford wonderful views, shady resting places and an opportunity to experience the abundant bird life.


The Ebenezar and Tzaneen Dams

They irrigate the Letaba Valley and are popular recreational spots for water sports, and offer good angling. Various bass competitions are hosted in Tzaneen every year.

The Commonwealth Plantations

Contains three varieties of Eucalyptus trees planted as an experiment plot in 1914 and are now 55 meters tall. In 1939 the plot was "dedicated" to the Commonwealth Forestry Commission when their annual conference was held in South Africa. The plantation is situated within the sapekoe - Middelkop Estate.

Sapekoe Middelkop Tea Estates

Offers interesting estate and factory tours. Beautiful scenery and tea tasting.

New Agatha Forest Estates

Was the staging post of the Zeederberg Coach Company that ran a service between Polokwane (Pietersburg) and Leydsdorp in the 19th century. Today an up market hotel and spa is located there.

Leydsdorp

The former gold rush town of Leydsdorp has historic buildings, a fascinating cemetery and a big Baobab tree which was once the site of a local pub.

Ofcolaco

An acronym for Offers of the Colonial Land Company was formed by a group of redundant British and Indian army officers who pooled their resources and settled in the area.

The Downs

A local miner named a scenic highland area south of Tzaneen in 1905 because it reminded him of his home in the Surry Downs in England. The area now forms part of the Lekgalameeste Nature Reserve.

Agahta Crocodile Ranch

An interesting projects which offers feeding tours, and products of the crocodiles as well as a curious to tourists.

Other Places

Various farm stalls, nurseries and curious shops, with tea gardens or small restaurants are on the various routes in and around Tzaneen.
